Print it Your Way

June 1, 2004

Just had my first article published over at A List Apart: Print it Your Way. The technique makes use of Chris Pederick’s Web Developer Toolbar extension for Mozilla Firefox, which he has configured to allow you to Edit CSS on the fly. This allows you to modify the CSS of any page on any site, and save those styles for later.

There’s been quite a bit of discussion about the article and one thing has become very clear to me:

I didn’t emphasize enough that the techniques used in the article are aimed at developers as end users and not every day average users as end users.

I first used it for creating my own print versions but then started using it for breaking out of fixed width designs, over-riding illegible font-sizes and colours, and hiding ads and other items.

Clearly the technique is not for everyone, and it certainly doesn’t go far to help our every day average end user. But, as developers, if we have the knowledge and the tools, why not use them for ourselves to make our lives easier?
