Links and Default Link Styles

One of the fundamental conventions on the web doesn’t live up to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Published over at WATS.ca, Contradictions in Accessibility: Links and Default Link Styles asks the question:

Why are visited links and unvisited links, by default, distinguished by colour alone?
