So close yet so far

May 16, 2005

(Written a few hours ago while on the plane, and now posting it from Logan International, Boston, where I’ve actually had to pay for wi-fi access. How bizarre.)

At SXSW in March, I told Ethan and Dan that if ever I was in Boston that I’d look them up to get together. I suggested the same to Jason and Rob if I was in Philadelphia.

So I’m now sitting on a plane from Chicago to Boston at 10pm Central time. I land in Boston at almost 1 am Eastern time and then get to switch from American Airlines to a US Air flight from Boston to Philadelphia leaving at 5:30am, and then board a flight from Philly to Ottawa at 7:35am that arrives at 9:11am.

Something tells me you guys will understand if I don’t call you when I get into town.

This crazy adventure all over the US isn’t because my flight from Austin to Chicago was delayed by an hour. We arrived in Chicago early enough that I could have made my connecting flight to Ottawa if it weren’t for the fact that we sat on the runway waiting for our gate to clear for 45 minutes.

My other option was to get a 9am flight direct from Chicago in the morning and arrive just before noon. While that seemed reasonable, I really just want to get home to see my wife and see my kids before they head off to school (my two daughters are both in school in the afternoon on Monday).

I’m not really known for taking the easy route when it comes to travel, so I guess this isn’t really much of a surprise.

This trip Back to Austin was really quite enjoyable – I actually wrote quite a bit on the way down here and on the way back, so hopefully some more updates soon.

Update, 4:30am, Logan International Airport: when you get one the following on your boarding pass:
* S *
It means that you’re going to get searched.

pffffft. That sounds like pansy talk. I guess I understand. This just means that you owe us TWO horseback rides with the Mounties when we come visit.

Two horseback rides and a gallon of maple syrup.

Hopefully I’ll be able to collect in September!

ps. Sucks that we missed you, man. Hope Logan didn’t suck too mightily.

What’s unbelievable, is that I was at Logan precisely at the same time, landing around 1AM from South Carolina.

Had I known, we could’ve met up for a Cinnabon or something :-)

Next time!

*S* ?! Talk about a ‘twitchy’ nation! I could understand if I got searched — I look a bit like a drug dealing terrorist… but YOU got searched??!

I hope they heated the gloves first 0_o
